Question of The Week: How Do I Choose The Right Hair Extensions/Weave?

For beginner hair extension/weave wearers finding the right hair extensions/weave can be a daunting task. Almost like a punishment lol. There are a lot of different textures, styles, straight hair, long hair, curl patterns, lengths and the list goes on.

We have heard your cries and want to help you get through this, so you can become an expert in choosing the right hair extensions/weave that are right for you!

The origin will give you the hint of the texture of the hair extension/weave as well as how the hair will look and feel. Below are some of the popular origins and their texture:

Brazilian Hair - It comes from the pacific of Brazil. It is known for its full body, beautiful bounce, texture and versatility. This hair texture blends well with all types of hair even hair of thicker textures. Whether you are natural or permed, this hair is likely to blend well with your hair texture. It is mainly known for its softness yet thick texture. It is available in wavy, straight or curly textures. The Straight textures are not bone straight it has a bit of a light wave. Brazilian hair is good for all hairstyles. It holds curls beautifully. It will last a long time if you take care of it.

Indian Hair- Indian hair is very high quality hair from the temples of India and cut from the donors head. This hair is very light and airy. Indian hair usually comes in a natural straight and natural wave/curly pattern. The color of the hair will vary in browns. If you are looking for a natural wave then this is the hair for you. Indian hair is great because it does not tangle, shed easily or lose its natural wavy look. It does have a frizzy appearance, however once washed and conditioned properly the frizzy appearance will fade. Subject to frizz in hot months.

Vietnamese-  Vietnamese comes directly from Vietnam. This hair is cut from the donor’s head, wefted to a track and cleansed. Vietnamese hair is of the highest quality. In Vietnam, the women rarely process their hair or straighten it and have a strict diet to maintain the beauty of their hair. Many of the women in the country grow their hair incredibly long because of this the hair can be purchased in long lengths from 30 inches and above. This hair is soft and silky. It comes in body wave and straight. It does not have as much luster as Brazilian hair, and it is also thicker. It hold curls without effort and is very much sought after.

Malaysian Hair - Malaysian hair can appear very shiny but after the first 2/3 washes the shine lessens considerably and will look more natural. Curls will not loosen or drop with time but maintain their form for the entire day. No product is required to maintain the curl. Avoid using oil spray on this hair as it will make the hair very shiny and heavy.  Malaysian hair is soft and silky. If you want volume and thickness, Malaysian hair is your best option. It gives great bounce and heavy body. Malaysian hair comes naturally dark in color and natural straight. Due to its fullness, it can have a tendency to be dry if proper care isn’t taken. Moisture in the form of good leave-in conditioner should be used so that the hair will not dry out.

Peruvian Hair -Peruvian hair is coarser and thicker in texture than Malaysian or Brazilian hair however lightweight. It blends well with African-American relaxed hair textures and medium Caucasian hair textures. Peruvian hair has been growing in popularity 2010. It is extremely manageable. Peruvian hair is good for sleek straight styles.

Cambodian- Cambodian hair has straight lined hair cuticles.  It has a slightly thick texture and is a good match with some Caucasian, Hispanic, and relaxed African American hair.

Hair Patterns

Hair pattern is definitely a matter of choice. You have the options of straight, curly or wavy. Below is some insight to the different hair patterns:

Straight- Welp there isn't much to say about straight hair extensions/weave its self explanatory. Straight hair is silky and sleek great for long sexy straight styles or blunt cut bobs. It is recommended to use straight hair extensions/weave only for straight hairstyles not for curly styles. It is straight for that purpose, it will hold a curly but not as well as it's curly or wavy counterparts.

Curly- Curly hair has many different curl patterns, again depending on your preference and look this would be up to your liking. With curly hair extensions/weave it ranges from loose curls to tight kinky curls that mirror unprocessed African American hair textures. Our Brazilian curly hair extensions/weave does not have a loose curl or super tight curl it falls in between and great to blend with African American natural hair or give you a curl exotic feel and look.

Wavy- Wavy hair is one of the most popular hair patterns sold at Rated Bougie Hair Company. You have the choice of Body Wave, Loose Wave and Spanish Wave. Wavy hair gives you the versatility to wear it wavy, straight and get the most beautiful big bombshell curls. Body Wave is the most popular. It has waves that are big and beautiful like ocean waves. Loose Wave is a spiral wave that is fairly loose and gives volume. Spanish Wave is a tighter wave that gives you that wet wavy look and great for your island vacations.

When it comes to choosing your length, you have to decide if you want to be conservative or go all in with a dramatic change. Below are some of the popular length choices and a little insight on each of them:

12 Inch Hair:  Natural hair length that reaches the chin or longer. Great length for natural length bob cuts.

14-16 Inch Hair: Hair length that reaches the shoulder or longer that reaches the collar bone. Conservative hairstyles.

18-20 Inch Hair: Hair length that reaches and extends past collarbone and can reach the middle of the back. A step up from a conservative hair length.

22 & longer Inch Hair: Hair length if you want the length of hair extensions to reach past the middle of your back or longer. For more dramatic length and hairstyles.

Raw Hair vs Virgin Hair

Raw Hair:  Raw Hair is hair that has not been altered by steam or chemically processed in any way. Donors have never had their hair straightened or curled. Raw Hair is the most natural, purest, and 100% authentic hair on the market today. It is simply the highest quality hair extensions/weave that can be found. All hair cuticles are intact and naturally aligned in one direction which prevents matting and tangling. Every bundle of Raw Hair is unique because each hand cut ponytail from a donor has a distinct natural hair pattern.

Virgin Hair: Virgin Hair is hair that has not been chemically processed. Chemical processing includes coloring, relaxing, and/or perming. Virgin Hair is steamed processed to achieve different textures, such as, body wave, deep wave, loose wave, kinky curly, etc.

Choosing the hair origin, texture, hair pattern and length is ultimately your choice. It depends on what type of look you are going for. We hope that this little guide gives you more confidence when choosing which hair extensions/weave to purchase for your next hairstyle!
